The facilities in each HOA vary by location. Many HOAs offer community gyms, pools, clubhouses, tennis courts, and play grounds. When you pay HOA fees, you’re paying to use all of the amenities inside of the community. The biggest benefit of these amenities is that they are located just minutes from your home. This can be a big draw for families with kids, and guests that frequently visit from out of town.
Say one house on the block does not keep up with their lawn and all of the other houses do, the HOA can enforce the unkept home to take action. This prevents disagreements or arguments with neighbors since the HOA can serve as an impartial mediator.
Unfortunately, the largest con of living with an HOA is the cost. Fees usually range from $100-$400 a month. Because of this, a mortgage on a condo plus HOA fees can cost more than buying a larger home. So, it’s important that you calculate those fees into your monthly payments.
Some people consider the HOA regulations of their neighbor strict and somewhat unnecessary. Some HOA rules restrict pet size, exterior decoration, and forbid renting. Other HOAs will fine you if you leave your garbage bins out past the garbage pickup day. It’s important to read the rules of the HOA before you commit to moving your family. If you are not someone who agrees with these rules and regulations, living with certain HOAs can be difficult.
